Speaking about her ex-husband Kiffin started his coaching career as an assistant at Colorado State University, where he worked with the wide receivers. He afterward moved on to become a subordinate at Fresno State University and subsequently at the University of Southern California (USC). He was part of the USC staff that defeated the 2003 National Championship.

At the age of 31, Kiffin was named the head coach at the University of Tennessee in 2007. He had a triumphant first season, directing the team to an SEC East division title and a 10-4 overall record. Nevertheless, his assignment at Tennessee was marked by discussion and he quit after one season to become the head coach at USC.
